Flea Infestation in cats
It is hard to imagine that this new addition to your home could have an infestation of fleas. A kitten may have aquired fleas from their original environment and so it is not uncommon for them to bring them into your home when they intially come to live with you. Take for example the mother cat having fleas, it’s then likely the kittens will too. If there was another pet in the home such as another cat, or dog, then again, there’s a possibility that even though the mother cat wasn’t allowed out while she was nursing her kittens, fleas were brought in by the other pets. Humans are more than capable of bringing in fleas on their clothes and feet.
A flea comb is a basic item that all homes should posess. Run a flea comb through your kitten’s fur once it’s home, in somewhere like a bathroom. You should pay special attention behind the ears, and at the tail base, which are likely spots to find fleas. One is all that is required to ascertain that this issue needs addessing.
In your kitty grooming box, you should have picked up something that will both kill off the fleas, and be safe for a newborn kitten. You should keep this to hand when you bring your new kitten home in case you find a flea. Your kitten is likely to be feeling nervous at this point so spak gently, and try to reassure it.If possible try and so this on your own ensuring that other pets and members of the family are in the room in order to keep this as stress free as possible. Now your kitten’s clean it can be introduced to the family, though shouldn’t be allowed into contact with any bedding etc that it was in contact with before the treatment. Make sure that you wash these all out thoroughly before he’s allowed to have them back.
More often than not your kitten will arrive flealess, though by preparing for the worse you can avoid a potentially big job.
